Target Market & Target Audience

An audience is a group of people who are most likely to be receptive to news about a specific product or service. Defined using processes such as customer feedback, market research, and competitive analysis, an audience represents the prospects who will buy what you sell.

What is the difference between target audience and target market?

Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, an audience is not the same as a target market. The latter refers to all potential customers of a brand, product, or service, while an audience is a more specific group that you actively communicate with for a specific purpose - such as a sales promotion, product launch, or other marketing campaign.

In other words, an audience is a subset of a larger target market. As such, it is segmented along similar lines, taking into account demographics such as age, location, income, occupation, and gender identification. It's also more focused, more detailed, and of course smaller.

Businesses often have different audiences for different products or services, or even different audiences for the same product. A target audience can be broad or narrow, depending on the specific needs of each campaign and the availability, quality, and quantity of data.
